The first international sheep’s milk cheese competition kicks off

Cagliari, May 6, 2019 – Fresh or mature, marbled or flavoured cheeses, provided they are based on sheep’s milk. These are just some of the categories competing in the 1st international sheep’s milk cheese competition, which will be officially opened and presented next Wednesday (May 8, 2019, at 7.30 p.m.) at the headquarters of Sonia Factory, the “home” of the founder of Giallo Zafferano, Sonia Peronaci, in via Bramante 37, Milan.

The competition is an opportunity for operators from all over the world to exchange views, stimulate quality growth and diversification of production, and increase knowledge and consumption of sheep’s milk cheeses at regional, national and international level.

If Italy is the fifth largest producer of such cheeses in the world, Sardinia is not only the first region in terms of number of sheep producing milk (with more than 3 million), but also the leading region for the collection of sheep’s milk and its processing into products with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).

 

The initiative, which will be presented in detail on Wednesday, is aimed at producers from all over the world and includes numerous in-depth events, ending with the prize-giving of the winners in March 2020.

In addition to exploring the topic, encouraging discussion and illustrating the Competition, Wednesday evening, will also give space to the culinary aspect and taste, undoubtedly the basis of the impact of sheep’s cheese on the Sardinian economy. It will do so with two guests and exceptional ambassadors: the first is Francisco Porcella from Cagliari, international surfing champion and TV star, the second is Clelia Bandini, Sardinian chef from Ogliastra who will enliven the evening with an engaging showcooking.

The initiative is promoted by a partnership composed of the Department of Agriculture and agro-pastoral reform of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Laore Sardinia, regional agency for agricultural development, Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture and Crafts of Nuoro, Consortium for the protection of Pecorino Romano PDO cheese, Consortium for the protection of Pecorino Sardo PDO cheese, Consortium for the protection of Fiore Sardo PDO cheese and OILOS, Interprofessional body for Sardinian sheep’s milk.
