Consortium for the protection of Pecorino Romano PDO cheese
The Consortium for the Protection of Pecorino Romano Cheese, established in November 1979 by a group of operators from Lazio and Sardinia, obtained the mandate of supervising the production and trade of Pecorino Romano from the Ministry of Agriculture, together with the Ministry of Industry, on January 14, 1981.
Since April 28, 2002, the Consortium has obtained the new mandate for the protection of the PDO products by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. The aims of the Consortium, specified in the statute, include the protection and supervision of the production and marketing of Pecorino Romano, the protection of the designation in Italy and abroad, the increase in consumption and the improvement of product quality, in collaboration with regional, national and EU bodies and institutions.
From then on, the centre of gravity shifted decisively towards Sardinia. Antonello Loddo, an exponent of the world of cooperatives, who led the Consortium from 1986 to 1992, took the control. From 1992 to 1996, the helm passed to an important private producer, the Sardinian Serafino Pinna. After three years, he was succeeded by Salvatore Meloni who, elected for the first time in 1996, led the Consortium until 2011. From 2011 to 2014, the Consortium was led by Gianni Maoddi.
The current president is Salvatore Palitta.

The ministerial mandate has been renewed every three years.
Since August 2, 2007, the Consortium has its registered office in Villa Muscas, a historic Villa in Cagliari that houses one of the most representative and evocative museums of peasant culture in Sardinia.
For over 20 years, the Consortium for the Protection of Pecorino Sardo PDO has been working to control quality and promote it in Italy and around the world. Its activity, closely linked to the achievement of its statutory objectives, has enabled the product to gain an important place on the national market, so much to be unanimously considered a symbol of its Area of Origin: Sardinia.
